Earlier today I attended the Tamworth and District Civic Society event to mark the 180th anniversary of the six serving maids who died in the Castle Inn Fire on the night of 2nd November 1838.
The six maids slept at the top of the house, because the fire was inaccessible, they were unable to escape. Servants tried to rescue the maids by using a ladder placed at their window but it was too late, the heat and smoke inhalation was too intense.
The tragedy brought the town together who wanted to ensure nothing of a similar nature could happen ever again. It led to the formation of the Tamworth Voluntary Fire Brigade. You can see the memorial to the women outside of the Library.
TDCS run regular events for residents to learn about local history and heritage and get involved with improving local education on our town's history as well as preserving and improving upon what we have. To learn more about the group or to join visit
