Year after year HMRC receive some bizarre and imaginative excuses as well as unusual expense claims following the Jan 31 Self Assessment Deadline.
HMRC have done a video to highlight some of the bizarre excuses and claims they have received over the past 10 years. This includes dogs eating the post, a DJ too busy with a party lifestyle, travelling in the mountains, hamsters eating post and mother in laws putting curses on people!
So enjoy the bit of fun but remember that the Self Assessment Tax Return deadline for 2018-2019 is tomorrow - Jan 21st

If you know your return is going to be late and have a genuine excuse, call ahead to let them know. Those who fail to complete their assessment are seen as tax evading and will be fully investigated, in addition to any late penalties they receive.
