The results of the Big Plastic Count are in for my office and you can see them below! As suggested in the run up to the count, the biggest amount of plastic used in our office is coffee pods that the staff bring in. We do recycle those through the www.podback.org scheme as well as our ordinary industrial recycling collections.
The office used slightly less plastic than we expected at the beginning of the week but perhaps this was because we were more conscious whilst monitoring!
It was interesting following how much plastic is used and I can imagine eye opening for those monitoring their household waste. Businesses are getting on board when it comes to making better use of recycled plastic and are expected to jointly invest up to £149 million, alongside a £60 million Government investment, to help fight the global battle against single use plastics, through the development of new forms of sustainable packaging.
Funding is also being used to find ways to cut waste in the supply chain, develop new business models and create new sustainable recyclable materials - for instance I note that some firms already use wool, instead of bubble wrap to help keep fragile goods safe during transit.
We will continue with our Clean Growth Challenge supporting our best minds and businesses in developing the solutions and industries of tomorrow - whilst seeking to improve the environment at the same time.
For those who participated this week, let me know how you got on, has it made you think differently about your consumption?
