'Local Cab' scheme in Tamworth

Acorn Cabs Lichfield Street

Many of you have written to me about the difficulties there are in booking cabs in the local area - particularly if you want to go out of an evening.

I had previously asked Bolt and Uber to operate in the area but with a limited number of local licenced drivers, this was difficult for them to do.

Tamworth Borough Council is up to date with their taxi driver licensing but the numbers that apply are limited, particularly as many taxi drivers took on different driving roles during the pandemic and have not switched back.

However, Uber is now trying something a little more localised for our area - the 'local cab' scheme.  This means that passengers now have the option to book trips through the app or online using a local operator alongside the regular Uber operators.  At the moment the local firm fulfilling the local cab rides is Acorn Taxis, a company I know many of you have used and trust.

Hopefully the partnership will allow more people, especially young people to book a cab more easily of an evening on demand.  The partnership will be providing great new opportunities for local drivers to earn and as they know the area well - your trip will certainly be value for money!

I look forward to seeing the partnership progress but if you have considered driving as a career contact Acorn or one of the many other local firms to begin your journey.

Tourism is currently worth £127 billion to Britain’s economy and as Britain’s seventh largest export industry, inbound tourism’s economic contribution is currently valued at £26.2 billion. We are lucky to have so much on our doorstep that I want to continue to promote.
