Child Tax Credits for people who adopt

From today the Government has extended support in Child Tax Credits for parents who adopt children from local authority care or care for them under a non-parental caring arrangement.

The amounts they receive for these children will not affect the amounts that claimants might get for other children in their household.

The exception applies from the date you become responsible for the adopted child either the formal adoption date or the date of placement, depending on when parental responsibility is passed over to you.

If you feel Child Tax Credit support could help your family and want to find out more call 0345 300 3900.

You will also need to send your child's original adoption certificate to the team so make sure you have this to hand. For kinship care, child arrangement orders or guardianship orders, the relevant certificates need to be sent.

Any parents who are in the process of adopting and do not yet have a certificate or are in an informal arrangement can request a letter from their social worker and use that with their application.

This is a positive change to help ensure that all families, regardless of whether the parents are biological or not can receive financial support if they need it.
